He studied zoology (Hons.) and M.Sc. (zoology) from Presidency College, Kolkata. Mr. Sarkar appeared in Civil Services Exam. with zoology and anthropology optional and faced IAS interviews. He scored 352 in zoology and 349 in anthropology optional which were perhaps the highest scores in the nation at that time.
